What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening, a popular cosmetic dental procedure offered by professionals like Dr. Alexa, aims to enhance the aesthetic appearance of teeth by reducing stains and discoloration. Dr. Alexa employs the advanced Philips Zoom whitening system, a trusted and widely recognized method in the field. During an in-office session, a high-concentration hydrogen peroxide gel, specifically designed for the Philips Zoom system, is applied to the teeth. Then the specialized LED lights activates and accelerates the whitening process, ensuring a more efficient and noticeable outcome. This professional approach delivers effective results, brightening smiles and boosting confidence in a safe and controlled environment.

For at-home maintenance, patients may also receive take-home kits with our own brand of professional-grade whitening gel. These kits allow individuals to continue their whitening regimen in the comfort of their homes.

How does Teeth Whitening work?

In a Philips Zoom in-office whitening, Dr. Alexa starts with a thorough examination to ensure oral health. A concentrated hydrogen peroxide gel, customized for Philips Zoom, is then applied and activated by the LED light in two or three 15-minute sessions. This controlled process efficiently breaks down external stains like those from coffee, minimizing tooth sensitivity for visibly whiter teeth in a single session. Optimal results are achieved on thoroughly cleaned teeth, emphasizing the importance of oral hygiene and professional cleaning before the procedure. The combination of professional-grade agents and advanced LED light technology ensures efficient removal of external stains.

The wavelength of Philips Zoom! Laser is proven to be the most effective to initiate molecules within the whitening agent without overheating and damaging your teeth.

How is the treatment administered?

The protocol for Philips ZOOM Teeth Whitening consist in 3 simple steps:

Step 1: Our expert dentists conduct a professional consultation, providing clients with a clear preview of potential results by comparing a shade sample of their teeth’s color to the expected post-treatment color.

Step 2: Lips and gums are shielded, and teeth are coated with a 6% hydrogen peroxide whitening agent. The Philips Zoom! Laser light is then evenly distributed over the teeth in three 15-minute sessions, delivering instant results.

Step 3: Verified and recorded whitening results are ensured, accompanied by professional aftercare advice to maximize and maintain the outcomes for the future.

Side effects

Common side effects of teeth whitening, including procedures like Philips Zoom, are generally mild and temporary. These may include increased tooth sensitivity, particularly to hot or cold temperatures, and mild gum irritation. These effects typically subside shortly after the treatment.

In some cases, patients may experience white spots on the teeth, which is usually temporary and resolves with time. Overusing whitening products or undergoing excessive treatments may contribute to more pronounced sensitivity or irritation.

Frequently
Asked Questions

Stains on teeth appear when colored molecules stick to the plaque, tartar, and the surface of our teeth. Dental cleanings help remove plaque and tartar, but sometimes the stains still appear in the layer below called the dentin.

The bleaching solution applied to the teeth combines with oxygen from the air and carbon in the dentin to break apart the staining molecules stuck on the teeth.

We offer several types of whitening, mostly Hydrogen Peroxide in 6% concentration, but we can offer lower concentration, Carbamide Peroxide or Non-Peroxide gels if the client presents sensitive teeth.

Results from whitening vary from person to person and on the type of stains. Teeth whitening generally works best on yellowish-brown stains compared to gray stains.

Our in-office, immediate whitening procedures take just one hour in most cases! You can relax and listen to our relaxing music or use our free internet to post videos and pics of your whitening experience in our comfortable, cozy office. Of course we'll be there to bring you anything you need!

At-home whitening kit can be used as little as once every few months of up to several times a week (recommended is between 7-10 consecutive days) until the desired outcome is achieved. At-home kit provides a more gradual transition and are also great for maintaining shade after an in-office treatment. Results vary depending on the type and level of staining and from person-to-person.

Teeth whitening works best on teeth free of plaque and tartar. Staying current on your dental cleanings is important for your health, but will also ensure the best possible results for whitening. If you are due for a cleaning, you can schedule the dental cleaning few days before the teeth whitening.

Teeth whitening can cause sensitivity to the teeth and gums. Some patients experience little to no sensitivity, while other patients may need to limit the strength and time of the bleaching to avoid sensitivity. Speak to your dentist about ways to avoid sensitivity and always have the procedure performed by a licensed professional.

Your dentist may recommend a special toothpaste to use prior to and after the procedure, as well as suggest only certain types of whitening. If you do experience sensitivity after treatment, an OTC pain reliever can usually help to reduce the symptoms.

A major benefit of whitening your teeth under dental professional care is that you significantly reduce the risk of any damage to tooth enamel, gums, or otherwise.

Obtaining teeth whitening from a dental professional ensures you are getting legitimate whitening products from reputable vendors applied by professionally trained staff.

This will also reduce your chances for tooth sensitivity or root damage.

The cost of teeth whitening procedures varies depending on the services you desire. Custom take-home trays and bleach is the least expensive in most cases, because it does not require any special equipment or materials. In-office whitening costs more, because it requires professional staff, materials, and equipment to perform the procedure, however, the results are immediate and effective!

There is nothing special you need to do before whitening, however, the treatment does work best on healthy teeth free of plaque and tartar. If you know vou have teeth sensitivity, please schedule a consultation about two weeks prior to the whitening to pick up a special toothpaste.

To ensure the best results, you will want to avoid eating any foods or drinks that can stain teeth for at least 48 hours.

This includes coffee, tea, red wine, juices, berries, foods with artificial colors, etc. You should also refrain from smoking as long as possible.

Whitening does not change the color/shade of dental veneers, dental bonding/composite, dental crowns/bridges or any non-natural tooth restoration.

Teeth whitening lasts longest when patients follow a healthy diet, avoid smoking, avoid teeth staining foods and drinks, utilize a straw when possible, and maintain regular dental cleanings.

Custom take-home whitening trays and bleach can last several months and can be maintained by the patient as necessary. In-office whitening results can last several months to a year also be maintained at-home with custom whitening trays. We do not recommend in-office whitening more than once, maximum twice a year to protect your tooth enamel and gums.
